Couples’ New Math: Buy the House First, Get Married Later

-

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal (reposted on Realtor.com) says “the big wedding can wait” as more and more couples are deciding to jump right into homeownership proper to getting married.  They report that, in 2023, around 555k unmarried couples said they bought their home during the previous year – up 46% from 10 years ago when around 381k couples did the same.

In reshuffling the traditional order of adult milestones, some couples may decide not to marry at all, while others say they are willing to delay a wedding. Buying a home is as much, if not more of a commitment, they reason. It helps them build financial stability when the housing market is historically unaffordable.
